New for 2017 – STEMexpo

2017 marks the 5th year for STEMathon!  Because it has always been the primary goal of STEMathon to stay fresh and bring the latest in STEM education to practitioners, this year’s conference includes a new feature – a STEMexpo.

What’s a STEMexpo?  It’s an opportunity for pre-service and in-service teachers to show-and-share a great STEM lesson with fellow educators.  Ideally, educators enrolled in undergraduate or graduate programs related to STEM education (like a STEM Endorsement program at one of PA’s fine institutes of higher ed) will participate in the STEMexpo to show off an integrative STEM education project.

Here’s the Idea:  You have a great K-12 STEM design challenge or lesson plan that you would like to share with conference attendees.  But, you’re not interested in doing a full conference presentation, or you missed the deadline to submit a session proposal.  STEMexpo is your chance to share your idea in a more informal, but just as amazing way at STEMathon.  Instead of presenting during a scheduled session, you will set up a tabletop display that includes a trifold (like at a science fair), a pile of handouts of your STEM design challenge or lesson, and some materials or visuals to make your table display interactive.  You don’t even need to stand with your STEMexpo display!  Conference attendees will go on a self-guided exploration of the STEMexpo displays that are set-up throughout the conference center, visit your table, check out and interact with your display, and take one of your handouts.  Ta-da!  That’s it.  That’s how you do a STEMexpo.  Even better, once your idea is accepted, you’ll receive a special discount code for the conference.  Your conference registration will only cost you $100.  That’s the same price that presenters pay.

The Fine Print:  You need to submit the STEMexpo application form and your idea needs to be accepted.  You’ll receive an email to let you know either way.  The earlier you apply, the better your chances are at acceptance.  Although, quality will be the top priority!  Once accepted, you’ll need to register for STEMathon using the discount code.  Set-up is on August 1, 2017 from 1:00-5:00 PM or August 2, 2017 from 8:00-9:00 AM (that’s the morning of the first day of the conference).  Your STEMexpo display needs to be available from 9:00 AM on August 2, 2017 through 12:30 PM on August 3, 2017.  You will also need to check it periodically to replenish handouts and any consumable materials you provide for the interactive part of the show-and-share experience.
